30 Day Map Challenge - Completed!

During November, The Gartrell Group participated in the 3rd annual 30 Day Map Challenge, launched by Topi Tjukanov in 2019. It was a team effort all the way and a blast to see everyone’s creativity! We also enjoyed scrolling through the maps produced by participating cartographers around the world!

For your perusal, we’ve gathered all our maps from around the interwebs and are sharing them below. Let us know which one is your favorite!

Day 1 Prompt: Points

Can't say what we’re tracking but can tell you that we inferred the places where someone is most likely to get a ticket for overstaying their meter. 🙃

Prompt 2: Lines

For today’s prompt, lines, we made a convenient map: the optimal route for hitting all of the Portland-area McMenamins. Hopefully, we can all fill up our passports a little more efficiently with this guide. (Has anyone filled theirs already?!)

Prompt 3: Polygons

For today’s polygon prompt, we created a Right-of-Way map of Ladd's Addition. The neighborhood was named for and designed by the former mayor of Portland, William S. Ladd, who was inspired by the Washington, D.C. layout. Thanks to @wikipedia for the Ladd's Addition details.

Prompt 4: Color Friday: Green

What’s the point of living somewhere green (in all senses of the word) if you don’t have a means to appreciate it? Today’s map for the color green prompt shows how easy it is to get out and explore Portland—many trails are as functional as they are recreational. It's one of the best parts of living here (in our biased opinion.)

Prompt 5: Ukraine

We're thankful for all countries accepting Ukrainian refugees. For today's prompt, Ukraine, we want to highlight A Little More Help, a nonprofit Molly's friend, Cori Bilyayev, began. All donations are distributed directly via hyper-local, known contacts. You can donate here. http://alittlemorehelp.org/

Prompt 6: Network

A glimpse of a network model we're developing for a pedestrian safety analysis project—our contribution for today's prompt, network.

Also exhibit A for why visualization of data is so essential. Walking a few blocks may not sound like much, but crossing busy streets without traffic signals leaves a lot of room for human error (distraction).

Prompt 7: Raster

How long can you look at this map for today's raster prompt before filling up your water bottle (just in case)? The Normalized Difference Moisture Index from landsat 7 data with a watering holes dataset for the Arizona Trail.

Prompt 8: Open Street Map

Kudos to Oregon for daily updating the votes received tally. Your ballot must be postmarked today to be counted—as of 11/7, we still need a lot more returned!
Fun fact: in 2000, Oregon was the first state to implement mail-in-only voting.

Prompt 9: Space

Where do you put North in space? Our map of the American lunar landings for today’s space prompt. Please note how close Apollo 15 came to the edge 👀

Prompt 10: A Bad Map

We gotcha covered if you ever need to know the sum of the digits in the 2010 population. Our bad map for today’s #30DayMapChallenge prompt.

Prompt 11: Color Friday: Red

The red prompt got us thinking about red wine, then Chianti (of course), and its home, Italy. While Rome, Florence, Venice, and Naples deserve their reps, where would Italy be without its charming small towns?

Prompt 12: Scale

Ok, we kind of want this as a stained glass window ornament. Contiguous US counties in classic rainbow with colors signifying each county’s area, but scaled down 30% for today’s #30daymapchallenge prompt, scale.

Prompt 13: 5 Minute Map

A quick draw map for today’s five minute prompt where each country’s color is determined by where it falls in the English alphabet.

Prompt 14: Hexagons

How many train stations are in Deutschland? Quite a few! Enjoyed employing the most popular polygon to show our love for mass transportation. Our contribution to today’s prompt, hexagons, for the #30daymapchallenge.

Prompt 15: Food/Drink

Your drive time to Whole Foods vs. Popeyes in the greater Houston, TX, area. Thanks to Here https://www.here.com/ for the data that allowed us to deliver on today’s #30daymapchallenge prompt, food.

Prompt 16: Minimal

We couldn’t love this map of Oregon our CEO’s son made in Kindergarten any more. He clearly had his priorities straight! Could take or leave Salem though. 😉Today’s prompt was a minimal map—can’t wait to see everyone's contributions!

Prompt 17: A map without a computer

Ah, so impressed with the talent on our team! One of our developers, Sam Gartrell, drew his favorite fishing spot for today’s prompt: a map without a computer. Please note the lack of lat/long … we also wish we could find it.

Prompt 18: Color Friday: Blue

Someone needs this information: the city names that give you the highest Scrabble score. Ironically, Brian Grass' map for the #30daymapchallenge blue prompt showed us that Grizzly, Oregon takes the 🍰!

Prompt 19: Globe

Isn’t a trip around the world on everyone’s list? All seven members of the Campbell family (@underthesycamore) began an epic year-long adventure this summer, and we thought it would be fun to map their journey thus far for today’s globe prompt.

Prompt 20: “My favorite…”

One of our Geospatial Developers, Ryan Dalton, contributed this Destination Fishing Rivers for the “My Favorite” prompt. Think you would love this on your wall? His passion for cartography evolved into a side hustle—you can see more at OffTheGridMaps.com.

Prompt 21: Data: Kontur Population Dataset

For the Kontur Population Dataset prompt, we’re showing life on the wild side. This is the high population of people who share the island of Java with 45 active volcanoes. 😱

Prompt 22: Null

Null Island: a great place to get away from it all, we just don't want our data ending up there without us. Thanks to our Geo Developer, Brian Grass, for his creation of our Null prompt map for the #30daymapchallenge.

Prompt 23: Movement

This map will always be a favorite because it integrates so much data in user-friendly ways. For today’s prompt showing movement, we give you real-time flight tracking of the Western Fire Chiefs Association's firefighting planes and helicopters. As a team headquartered in the #PNW, we are thankful to have this resource during fire season (which feels year-round these days). Thankfully, there were few helicopters and planes to track today, so this is an older screenshot.

Prompt 24: Fantasy

Every team member is represented in “Portlandia,” — a fantasy-style map we created for today’s prompt.

Prompt 25: Color Friday: 2 Colors

Our founder, Bryce, loves to fish, so this map featuring rivers of Oregon was his contribution for today’s two-color prompt. Not pictured: all his favorite fishing spots 😉

We ❤️ the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife and our PNW neighbors REI—friendly reminder to #optoutside today.

Prompt 26: Island(s)

Islands of attenuation: whimsical walk times from several SE #PDX coffee dispensaries. We truly appreciate our founder’s visualization of this essential info and his creative use of the word “island” for our #30daymapchallenge prompt.

Prompt 27: Music

Ever wanted to time travel to the Punk scene of the 1970s to catch an iconic show? Ben McLeod, our wearer of many hats, created an incredible story map allowing you to get as close as you can without a Tardis 😉. Hope you enjoy perusing a few of NYC’s best spots and listening to some of the music that was performed there. Click here to explore today’s music prompt for the #30daymapchallenge!

Prompt 28: 3D

What our office’s neighborhood looks like in Lego. We used the @portlandgov's Building Footprint service to help us create this the Lego-inspired visual for today’s #30daymapchallenge prompt, 3D. Already working on our minifigures for next year. 😉

Prompt 29: “Out of my Comfort Zone”

What our office’s neighborhood looks like in @lego. We used the @portlandgov's Building Footprint service to help us create this the Lego-inspired visual for today’s #30daymapchallenge prompt, 3D. Already working on our minifigures for next year. 😉

Prompt 30:Remix

Watercolor for the win! Sam Gartrell created this interpretation of our Portlandia fantasy-style map for the final #30DayMapChallenge prompt, remix. The map was already one of our favorites this month, and it looks even better as a watercolor painting. The hard part will be deciding where to put it in the office.🤔
